Burakumin, a tribute to Yakuza subculture.

Burakumin” are social outcasts in Japanese Society. They are outcasts because their careers are associated with death (ie: butchers, morticians, leathermakers, etc.) Some Yakuza clans are comprised of Burakumin.

These stylized portraits inspired by Yakuza films were created without Photoshop. They were shot using a physical effect called “Front Projection“, the same method used to shoot the flying scenes in the original Superman with Christopher Reeves.

My model is Eric Baranda, another local photographer. His tattoos were hand drawn by me :)
